Spring Courses at In Your Ear

 

The following list includes four new classes being offered in addition to our Computers and Recording courses. In fall 2012, we plan to offer an even broader offering of classes for students and professional pursuing or expanding their career in audio and digital media production. All of our classes are available to students 17 years or older. However, full time VCU students may take some of our classes for credit, see below.

 

Computers and Digital Recording 101 (VCU MHIS-382; 3 credits) - $950 (VCU Students $775)
This class is full for the Spring Semester
Computers and Digital Recording 101 is an audio foundation course. The course covers proper acoustics, microphone types and techniques, audio physics, audio history, computers and computer parts, and basic DAW use. This 13-week course meets every Monday night from 7-9:40pm with some homework and two tests. The class starts January 23rd and ends May 7th. The course is taught by Carlos Chafin and Andrea Stefl and there is a limit of 15 students.
Included in the class is a textbook, Cubase Elements software and a project DVD, which you will receive in class.

Advanced Audio Production 201 (VCU MHIS-491; 3 credits) - $850 (VCU Students $675)
Advanced Audio Production 201 is a follow up to Computers and Digital Recording 101. This course focuses on the start to finish process of recording a band, including hands-on use of equipment, use of a patchbay, session set-up, recording, mixing and marketing considerations. The final project for this class is the record and mix a demo for a band of our choosing. This is a 13-week course that meets every Wednesday night from 7-9:40pm. Advanced Audio Production starts January 25th and ends May 9th. The course is taught by Carlos Chafin and Andrea Stefl and there is a limit of 15 students.
All students must have taken Computers and Music 101 in order to qualify and we also offer an optional Cubase Artist software upgrade for $75.

Introduction to Creative Editorial* - $700 - no student discount available
Introduction to Creative Editorial is is an introductory course on motion visual editing techniques. Special insight into the new features and design overview of AVID Media Composer and Final Cut will be covered. Topics covered include editorial history, film editing history and techniques, importing media, transcoding options, organizing your project, basic editing techniques and technical delivery considerations for media. This is a 6-week course that meets every Friday from 6-8pm. The class will start March 23rd and end on April 27th. The course is taught by Stace Carter, an Apple Certified Final Cut instructor and there is a limit of 15 students.
Price for the class is $700. Required materials include editorial software, AVID Media Composer is preferred. The software is not included with the course. Payment must be made in full payable to In Your Ear before classes begin.

 

Introduction to Visual Media Production* - $700 - no student discount available
Introduction to Visual Media Production is a mini course in traditional film and video production. This includes lighting techniques, camera technology overview and use, introduction to various crew personnel and their duties, use of teleprompting, green screen techniques and location sound. This is a 6-week course that meets every Friday from 6-8pm. The class will start February 3rd through March 9th. The course is taught by Stace Carter, an AVID Certified and Apple Certified Final Cut instructor and there is a limit of 15 students.
Price for the class is $700. Payment must be made in full payable to In Your Ear before classes begin.

 

ProTools 101* - $800 - no student discount available
ProTools 101 is a introduction to moderate user course on running AVID ProTools. The course covers the basics in running the program including track types, setting up projects and doing simple recordings. This is part one of a two part course leading to ProTools certification. This is a 8-week course that meets every Tuesday afternoon from 3:30-5pm. The class starts March 27th and ends May 8th. The course is taught by Paul Bruski and there is a limit of 10 students.
Price for the class is $800. Included with the class is mandatory copy of entry level ProTools software. Note if you already own a current version of Protools, you may be eligible for a $75 discount. Payment must be made in full payable to In Your Ear before classes begin.

 

Cubase 101* - $600 - no student discount available
Cubase 101 is a basic course on running Steinberg’s Cubase. The course covers the basics in running the program including track types, setting up projects and doing simple recordings. This is a 8-week course that meets every Tuesday afternoon from 3:30-5pm. The class starts January 24th and ends March 20th. The course is taught by Andrea Stefl, and there is a limit of 10 students.
Price for the class is $600. Included in the class is Steinberg Cubase Elements. Note if you already own a current version of Cubase, you may be eligible for a $75 discount. Payment must be made in full payable to In Your Ear before classes begin.

The following courses run from January 23rd till May 16th. Each class meets once a week for 1.5-3 hours. There will be an open house for anyone who wishes to see the studio before signing up on January 19th from 7-9pm.
